Can I trust the answers in Magisterium AI?
Magisterium AI is trained on thousands of Church documents that fall within the Ordinary and Extraordinary Magisterium, including saint writings, papal encyclicals, Scripture, the Catechism, and more. It strives to provide accurate responses rooted in Catholic teaching. However, like all AI models, it operates within a predefined knowledge base and may occasionally misinterpret or misrepresent information. This tool is still in its beta phase, meaning it is continuously improving and being refined.
Additionally, Magisterium AI not meant for spiritual or moral direction. You are encouraged to verify answers by consulting official Church documents directly or speaking with a trusted priest or theologian. When you begin using Magisterium AI in Hallow, you will see a full-screen disclaimer to this effect. This disclaimer emphasizes that while Magisterium AI is great for learning about the faith and finding references, personal and pastoral matters should always be directed to a priest.
What is the Catholic Church’s stance on AI?
The Catholic Church's stance on artificial intelligence (AI) is rooted in its commitment to uphold human dignity, promote the common good, and ensure that technological advancements serve humanity responsibly. The Church recognizes the potential of AI to contribute positively to society but emphasizes the necessity of ethical considerations in its development and application.
The Vatican's Dicastery for Culture and Education and Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith have recently instructed us in their a note called Antiqua et Nova, "all scientific and technological achievements are, ultimately, gifts from God" (para. 36). AI is one of these achievements.
The Church also teaches that "AI [can] be used as an aid to human dignity if it helps people understand complex concepts or directs them to sound resources" (Antiqua et Nova, 85), we've carefully implemented this very limited instance of AI to make available to more people the theological teachings of the Church in an accessible and easily categorized way.
Of course, the Church also reminds us that AI, as a digital machine, is "fundamentally confined to a logical-mathematical framework," as opposed to “human intelligence, which is shaped by embodied experiences." (Antiqua et Nova, para. 31) For this reason (though not this reason alone), AI can never replace human intelligence.
