What can I add to my Routine?

Know what items you can schedule and how different kinds of content behave in your Routine.

You can add games, Prayer Reminders, and audio content to your Routine. For an introduction to our Routines feature, check out the article linked below.

Games

Get reminded to play today's edition of your favorite game so that you don't lose your streak. If you already completed it before its time in your Routine, we won't notify you.

Prayer Reminders

A reminder to pray at a certain time that is not linked to Hallow content.

  • Create this by entering Edit mode and adding an empty Time Block. When you exit Edit mode, you will be asked if you want to delete the Time Block or leave it as a Prayer Reminder.

Sessions

A specific prayer or reflection. Add a Session when you want to listen to the same exact thing every day.

Collections

A group of prayers or reflections. What plays in your Routine updates as you progress through the Collection. Add a Collection if you want to listen to a different Session from it each day. When you complete a Collection, you can use Edit mode to remove it from your Routine if you wish.

  • For daily Collections (like Daily Reflections with Jeff Cavins, the Daily Rosary, and current community prayer challenges), the Routine generally shows the Session associated with today's date.

  • For all other Collections (such as novenas, praylists, or previous community prayer challenges), the Routine shows the next incomplete Session in the sequence.

Music

You can add songs or albums to your routine. Songs behave like Sessions. Albums behave like Collections.

How can I tell the difference between a Collection and a Session?

Keeping an eye on a few details while you're managing your Routine will help you check if you're adding an item that will repeat the same exact thing (like a Session) or update day-to-day (like a Collection).

Comparing your Routine to Edit mode

  • Collections display with the Session title when viewing your Routine, but change to the Collection title in Edit mode.

  • Session titles stay the same when entering and exiting Edit mode.

In the Routine builder

  • On the Top Results list, Collections show the respective number of Sessions that they contain whereas Sessions show their duration.

  • In the search results, Collections and Sessions are clearly labeled.

On content pages

  • Collection pages show you a list of Sessions. When you tap the 3 dots () to add a Collection to your Routine, you will not see a Go to Collection button.

  • Session pages do not list any other Sessions. When you tap the 3 dots () to add a Session to your Routine, you will see a Go to Collection button.

In the media player

  • Adding an item by tapping the 3 dots () to the left of the title always schedules the Collection if the Session you're listening to belongs to a Collection.

FAQ

Why won't my Routine play new podcast episodes?

Routines don't play new podcast episodes because their playlists behave like other non-daily Collections when added to your Routine. You can add a podcast to your Routine to listen to previous episodes.

Why does my Routine repeat the same thing every day instead of progressing through the Collection?

If your Routine repeats the same audio every day instead of progressing through the Collection, you may have added a Session instead of the Collection. Delete the item from your Routine and re-add it using the tips provided above to make sure you're scheduling the Collection.

I'm sure that I added a Collection to my Routine. Why doesn't it play in the correct order?

Collections might not play in the correct order if part of the Collection has been played outside of the Routine or if you've added the Collection more than once per day.

Try going to the Collection page, tapping the 3 dots () on the top right, and tapping Mark All Unplayed. This will reset the Routine to the first Session. If you already played the Collection today, wait until tomorrow to Mark All Unplayed before you attempt to listen to it.

A Collection can currently only be added to your Routine once a day. If your Routine repeats the same session multiple times a day, make sure that the Collection is only added to your Routine once daily.

Can I add a Prayer Campaign, Parish Challenge, or other community content to my Routine?

Prayer Campaigns, Parish Challenges, and other community content cannot be added to a Routine. The app currently only supports content produced by Hallow. Consider adding a Prayer Reminder to your Routine to represent community content like Prayer Campaigns or Parish Challenges.

Can I add readings from the Bible tab to my Routine?

Readings from the Bible tab cannot currently be added to your Routine. You can use other features found in the Bible tab (like Highlights and Bookmarks) to organize your favorite readings.

What if I just want a reminder to pray without listening to anything?

You can schedule a simple reminder to pray in one of two ways:

  • Add an empty Time Block and exit Edit mode to create a Prayer Reminder.

  • Look up Unguided Prayer in the app for Sessions with customizable lengths from 5 to 30 minutes. Once you've chosen your desired duration, tap the 3 dots () on the top left and then Add to Routine.
